56 Seychellois Training Overseas, 24 Specialising as Baie Lazare Health Centre Nears Completion

The long-anticipated Baie Lazare health centre could finally open its doors to the public by mid-2025, according to Minister for Health Peggy Vidot, who delivered the update during Tuesday’s National Assembly sitting.
The announcement came in response to a question from Hon. François Adelaide, MNA for Baie Lazare, who has been one of the most vocal advocates for advancing the project.
“The Baie Lazare health centre is one of the major initiatives to improve access to healthcare services in the district,” Minister Vidot said. “This project has experienced delays over several years, but I am pleased to say that we are now on track.”
According to the Minister, the contractor is expected to hand over the completed facility by end of May 2025. Procurement of medical equipment is already underway, with the ministry aiming to have everything in place for a June or July opening, depending on the delivery of critical supplies.
“We will not open until everything is ready,” she emphasised. “The facility must be fully equipped, the systems operational, and the staff prepared to provide quality service from day one.”
In a separate but related update, Minister Vidot noted that 56 Seychellois are currently training overseas in the health sector, with 24 undertaking specialisation programmes in various medical fields. This move is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen local capacity and ensure newly built facilities are staffed with well-trained professionals.
With Baie Lazare set to receive its own modern health centre, the long wait for improved local care may finally be nearing an end.
