Raga Football Club Receives SCR 5,000 Boost for Youth Development

VICTORIA: Local grassroots sports received a welcome boost this week as Raga Football Club was presented with a donation of SCR 5,000 from businessman Marco Francis. The contribution is aimed at supporting the club’s long-standing mission to cultivate young athletic talent within the community.
The donation was formally received by Dereck Forte, the founder and coach of Raga FC. Forte has been a fixture in community sports for over 24 years, dedicating his career to training and mentoring youth.
A Legacy of National Talent
Raga FC has served as a critical stepping stone for aspiring athletes in Seychelles. Under Forte’s guidance, the program has emphasized discipline and consistency, qualities that have seen several former players progress to represent Seychelles at the national level.
Despite these successes, the club operates with limited resources. Forte noted that the financial burden of maintaining the program often falls on him personally, covering costs for equipment, transport, and administrative fees to ensure that training remains accessible to children of all ages.
The Importance of Grassroots Investment
The benefactor, Marco Francis, is a well-known supporter of local football and emphasized that the value of such clubs extends beyond the pitch. He noted that grassroots initiatives are vital for keeping young people active, engaged, and on a positive life path.
“Investing in youth-focused initiatives is essential,” Francis stated during the handover. “Clubs like Raga FC provide more than just sports training; they provide mentorship and a sense of community that is indispensable for our youth.”
A Call for Consistent Support
The gesture highlights a broader challenge facing community-based sports across the archipelago. While the potential for athletic talent in Seychelles is evident, consistent financial backing remains a hurdle for many small clubs.
The leadership of Raga Football Club expressed hope that this contribution will serve as an inspiration for other businesses and members of the wider community to get involved. By strengthening the financial foundation of grassroots sports, the club aims to expand its reach and continue providing opportunities for the next generation of Seychellois footballers.
