Bernadette Furneau Sworn In as New Electoral Commissioner

Seychelles’ Electoral Commission has welcomed a new face to its leadership team, as Mrs. Bernadette Furneau was officially sworn in as Electoral Commissioner during an accreditation ceremony held Tuesday at State House.
Stepping into a pivotal role ahead of the 2025 general elections, Mrs. Furneau succeeds Mrs. Wendy Didon—who continues to serve as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission—and joins the ECS at a time of heightened political anticipation and scrutiny.
In her brief address following the swearing-in, Mrs. Furneau acknowledged the weight of the responsibility entrusted to her. “This is an important moment not only for me but for our democracy,” she said. “I am committed to upholding the Commission’s mandate to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.”
Her appointment comes as the Commission prepares to oversee a landmark election season marked by digital reforms, tight registration deadlines, and a wave of new political voices vying for public trust.
Political observers have noted that with the electorate’s growing demand for accountability and electoral integrity, the ECS will play an increasingly vital role in safeguarding public confidence.
With the clock ticking down to September’s three-day national vote, all eyes will be on the Commission—and its newest member—as Seychelles prepares for what could be a defining moment in its democratic journey.
