Mayor’s Office Declares War on Rats in Victoria — Citywide Campaign Launched to Tackle Infestation

The rats of Victoria have officially overstayed their welcome.

In a bold response to mounting public health concerns and citizen complaints, the Mayor’s Office has kicked off an intensive anti-rat campaign, aiming to reclaim the streets—and gutters—of the capital from a growing rodent menace.

The operation, which launched this week, brings together a task force of urban defenders: the Public Health Authority (PHA), the Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA), and the Pest Control Association of Seychelles (PECAS). Together, they’re setting traps, distributing bait, and targeting known infestation zones that were flagged in recent health surveys.

“This isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about public safety,” one city official told The Seychelles Times. “Rats are not just a nuisance. They’re a health hazard, and we’re treating this seriously.”

The campaign is set to run for three to six weeks, but officials say it may be extended if the whiskered invaders prove more stubborn than expected.

Residents and businesses are being urged to cooperate by maintaining cleanliness and properly disposing of food waste. The message from the Mayor’s Office is simple: it’s time to clean house—literally.

As the bait boxes hit the streets and the city takes a stand, one thing is certain: Victoria is not big enough for rats and people to live side by side.
