Growing up in Anse Louis under the care of his grandparents—a seamstress and a taxi driver—Mathieu was instilled with values of tradition, respect, and hard work. These early lessons set the foundation for a remarkable journey. Despite the challenges of a broken home, Mathieu’s academic journey was nothing short of stellar. He excelled at Anse Boileau Primary and Secondary School, and his academic prowess continued at the Seychelles School of Advanced Level Studies. There, he delved into Sociology, Law, Psychology, and Geography, earning excellent grades and the prestigious SNYC Award.
Mathieu’s thirst for knowledge and understanding of the human condition led him to Middlesex University, where he studied Psychology. His time there was marked by distinction as a youth leader, award-winning public speaker, and active participant in political and diplomatic programs. Trained in neurology, human behavior, counseling techniques, and crisis management, Mathieu returned to Seychelles with a wealth of knowledge and skills.
Recognizing the potential of young entrepreneurs, Mathieu ventured into the private sector, founding several successful businesses across various industries. His innovative approach and deep understanding of both traditional industries and emerging technologies earned him a reputation as a creative thinker. At just 25, he became the youngest person elected to the executive board of the Seychelles Employers Union, representing Seychelles on prestigious platforms such as the ILO, SADC, EU, and UN forums.
Mathieu’s entrepreneurial spirit and global perspective have further enriched his understanding of the challenges facing Seychelles, especially those related to climate change and the need for sustainable development. His vision for Seychelles is clear: to transform the nation into the “Monaco of the Indian Ocean,” a beacon of prosperity and innovation.“There is a light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel; we need to implement tried-and-tested principles. The way forward is through reform, this will contribute to prosperity and secure our unity,” says Mathieu, encapsulating his philosophy.
As a key member of the Seychelles United Movement, Mathieu is actively working on policies and legal frameworks aimed at creating a well-oiled government that leverages the nation’s natural beauty and resources to create wealth and opportunities for all Seychellois. His focus is on ensuring transparency, fostering a strong education system, reliable healthcare services, and a diversified economy that guarantees individual freedoms and liberties.
With a population of just 100,000, Mathieu believes Seychelles has the potential to stand tall and become a shining star of Africa. His commitment to reform and prosperity is unwavering, driven by the motto “Nou pa pou vann Seselwa kabri dan sak,” reflecting his dedication to transparency and integrity.
As the proposed Minister for Industry and Trade in the anticipated SUM administration of 2025, Mathieu’s vision for a prosperous and united Seychelles is not just a dream but a well-articulated plan rooted in practical, tried-and-tested principles.
