VICTORIA, Seychelles — The National Assembly of Seychelles on 19 June approved the creation of the Drug Enforcement Agency Seychelles, a new dedicated body tasked with combating narcotics trafficking and transnational organised crime.
The new agency will consolidate functions currently distributed across the police and customs services and is expected to work closely with regional and international counterparts on cross-border investigations. The bill was approved as part of a broader package of legislation tied to the government’s national security agenda.
Seychelles’ strategic location in the western Indian Ocean has made it a focal point for maritime drug interdiction efforts, including joint operations with the Seychelles Defence Forces and partner navies. The dedicated agency is intended to strengthen coordination on those operations and provide a single point of contact for international cooperation.
The Assembly also approved a bill earlier in the month to implement recommendations of the Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Commission, continuing a wider programme of institutional reform alongside the security restructuring.
