Seychelles Designates New Heritage Site for Cultural Preservation

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles has officially designated a new heritage site, reinforcing the country’s commitment to preserving its unique cultural and historical legacy for future generations. The designation follows a comprehensive assessment of the site’s historical, architectural, and cultural significance, conducted in consultation with heritage experts and local communities.

The newly designated site will be protected under national heritage legislation, with restrictions on alterations and a programme of conservation works planned to address ageing and environmental damage. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the designation reflects the importance of safeguarding the tangible reminders of the country’s history. The site will also be promoted as part of the country’s cultural tourism offering.

According to ministry officials, the designation is part of a wider programme to identify and protect heritage sites across the islands. The programme includes the development of management plans, training for heritage professionals, and public education initiatives to raise awareness of the importance of cultural preservation. Local communities have been closely involved in the process, with many contributing oral histories and traditional knowledge.

The new heritage site joins a growing list of protected locations that tell the story of Seychelles’ history, from early settlement to independence and beyond. Officials said heritage preservation is not only about protecting buildings and artefacts, but also about maintaining the cultural practices, languages, and traditions that give the sites their meaning. Continued investment in heritage protection is a key priority for the ministry.
