VICTORIA, Seychelles Winner of The Great Battle for the Crown, Abdel Assary, received a hero’s welcome upon his return to his home island of La Digue late yesterday afternoon.
The fifteen-year-old singer captured both the coveted crown and the People’s Choice Award during last Saturday final at the International Convention Centre Seychelles. His victory marks a significant achievement for the young talent from Seychelles smallest inhabited island.
Not only were his parents, Solana Assary and Gerard Camille, and family members present to welcome him back at the main port in La Passe, but his friends who had followed him through the contest and voted for him. They sang the Congratulations song to show their love for Abdel Assary and give him a triumphant welcome home.
Holding a Battle of the Crown poster, Abdel’s mother, Solana Assary, said she is proud of her son and the support he has received from Diguois. She expressed gratitude for the community turnout, noting that it demonstrates the pride La Digue residents take in celebrating achievements of their own.
The Great Battle for the Crown was organised by the British high commission in partnership with the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation, Taniah, and Isham Rath from Mozaik. The competition was designed exclusively for Seychellois to challenge their talent and creativity by recreating some of the United Kingdom’s most iconic hits.
Second overall was Lauren Leon and third place went to Chloe Abrams who was also second in the People’s Choice category. Abdel Assary will soon be leaving for London, United Kingdom, to take his voice to the international stage.
