Music Icon Celine Dine Passes Away – Nation Mourns Loss of Cultural Pioneer

Victoria, Seychelles – Seychelles is mourning the loss of yet another cherished figure in its music industry: singer and composer Celine Dine (née Didon), whose artistry shaped the nation’s musical culture for decades. She passed away on April 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate deeply.

Born in 1937, Celine was the fourth of twelve children. With two of her brothers already musicians, her love for music came naturally. In 1965, she left for Beirut, Lebanon, where she worked until 1971 before returning home to Seychelles to focus on her music and remain close to her mother.

Just a few years later, in 1975, she recorded her first song, ‘Anmenn mwan mon pti avyon’, which became an instant hit and remained popular for many years. Another of her timeless songs, ‘En roz i bezwen lapli’, further cemented her place in the hearts of Seychellois music lovers.

A Cultural Legacy

Mrs Dine was celebrated not only for her songwriting and compositions but also for her passion for traditional music, which enriched Seychelles’ artistic landscape and inspired generations. Friends, fellow musicians, and fans remember her as a carefree soul who loved life, laughter, and excitement.

President Patrick Herminie expressed his condolences, noting his “profound sadness at the passing of beloved Seychellois artist Celine Dine.” He emphasised that her death comes at a time when Seychelles continues to grieve the loss of several cultural icons, calling it “another painful reminder of how much the nation has lost in recent months, as voices that shaped our cultural identity continue to fall silent.”

Friends Thelma and Emie Mousbe shared heartfelt memories: “She was a very nice person. Celine was a friend of our older sister, and they went to Beirut together to work. Whenever she came back to Seychelles, she would visit us. From the time we were children, she became like family, and we always considered her our big sister. Even today, we feel her loss deeply.”

A Voice That Won’t Be Forgotten

Tributes have poured in across social media, with colleagues and admirers expressing their sympathies to her family. Mrs Dine captured the hearts of many and left an indelible mark on the local music scene.

As the nation reflects on her life and career, her musical legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations to come. Rest in peace, Celine Dine – your voice will echo through Seychelles forever.
