VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Unemployment Relief Scheme is being re-introduced with effect from January 2026, to support vulnerable groups through temporary work placements aimed at building skills and improving employability. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the decision during its session on Wednesday December 17, chaired by President Patrick Herminie.
Details of the programme were shared with local media during a press briefing at State House on Thursday morning by the secretary of state for Cabinet Affairs and Civil Service, Margaret Moumou. The scheme is designed as a temporary safety net for citizens who are out of work or under-employed, while also giving participants the chance to acquire new skills and work experience to ease their transition into longer-term employment.
Government officials said the reintroduction reflects the administration’s commitment to cushion the most vulnerable households during the current period of economic adjustment. Further operational details, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, are expected to be communicated in the coming weeks.
