VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles now has a total of 183 recognised and 26 certified properties under the Sustainable Seychelles tourism label programme. A total of 70 new tourism properties were recognised, while the Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte has been newly certified by the tourism department. The establishments were presented with their certificates during a ceremony held at Eden Bleu Hotel on Friday evening.
The Sustainable Seychelles Recognition and Certification programme is a national initiative aimed at promoting and recognising sustainable practices within the tourism sector. It is applicable to accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators across the country, and is designed to inspire, support, and recognise tourism establishments that integrate sustainable practices into their operations. These practices encompass energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, biodiversity protection, and active community engagement.
The ceremony is part of an ongoing, regular series, celebrating tourism partners who demonstrate exceptional commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Establishments are evaluated against baseline criteria including environmental management systems, social responsibility, and the adoption of best practices in the operations of the property.
The tourism department said the growth in the number of recognised and certified properties reflects the increasing commitment of the local tourism industry to sustainability, and demonstrates the country’s continued leadership in responsible tourism in the Indian Ocean region. The award was presented by Principal Secretary for Tourism, Mrs Sherin Naiken, in the presence of officials from the department and partner organisations.
