VICTORIA, Seychelles — The new members of the 8th National Assembly are currently undergoing a comprehensive five-day orientation programme, which started on Monday, October 20. The programme, led by the National Assembly secretariat, is designed to cover essential topics ranging from administrative onboarding to legislative processes, ethical conduct, and public engagement.
Out of the 34 members elected and proportionally appointed, two from Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) were absent — Bernard Georges, who is out of the country, and Sathyanaraynan Naidu, who is on medical leave. The secretariat confirmed that arrangements would be made to brief the two members on any sessions they are unable to attend, so that they can fully take up their legislative duties.
The induction is being delivered through a mix of presentations, group discussions and practical exercises, with the support of senior parliamentary staff, the Office of the Auditor General, the Electoral Commission, the Office of the Ombudsman, and the Seychelles Human Rights Commission. The sessions are intended to familiarise the new members with the rules of procedure, the role of committees, the budget cycle, oversight functions and the code of conduct expected of members of the National Assembly.
At the end of the programme, members are expected to have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, the legal framework within which the Assembly operates, and the support services available to them as they discharge their mandate in the service of the people of Seychelles.
