VICTORIA, Seychelles — The demolition of the once-iconic Reef Hotel at Anse Aux Pins is moving ahead faster than expected, bringing the decades-old chapter of the island’s tourism history closer to an end.
Work on the site, which for years hosted one of Mahé’s most popular beachside properties, has been progressing well according to the contractors, with the structure being systematically dismantled in line with safety and environmental requirements. The accelerated pace has been attributed to favourable weather conditions and the deployment of additional equipment on site.
Once the demolition is complete, the site is expected to be redeveloped as part of a broader plan to modernise the tourism offering on the east coast of Mahé. The area has long been earmarked for upgrading, with the Reef Hotel site considered a strategic location given its direct beach access and proximity to the Seychelles International Airport.
The end of the Reef Hotel marks the conclusion of an era for many Seychellois who worked at the property over the years, as well as for visitors who recall its distinctive position on the Anse Aux Pins coastline. Officials are expected to provide further updates on the redevelopment timeline in due course.
