VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Judiciary, in collaboration with the National Council for Children (NCC), hosted a ‘Hot Seat’ session at the Palais de Justice on Thursday morning, bringing together 30 students from Mahé, Praslin and La Digue for an engaging question-and-answer session with the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Anthony Fernando.
The one-and-a-half-hour session, now in its third year, aimed to increase the students’ legal awareness while sparking their interest in the court system in a fun and dynamic way. Through the exchange, the students were able to better understand the role of the judiciary and the Court of Appeal, ask thought-provoking questions, and gain insight into the importance of law and justice in society.
Speaking to the students, Justice Fernando encouraged them to join this line of work and to do well in school. ‘I’m very proud of the maturity of the questions and it shows that they are developing their curious minds,’ said the chief executive of the NCC, Yasmin Umarji, who explained that all questions were prepared by the students themselves.
Among the participants was Secondary 3 student Lhéa Philoé of Belonie school, who said the session was inspiring and that she is now eager to become a lawyer. Another student, Amy Hoareau, of Plaisance school, said it was very insightful and that it had inspired many to consider a career in law. The Judiciary and NCC said such activities are key to building a generation that values fairness, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
