VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Education has introduced the Professional Teacher Competency Standards, a framework designed to chart a clear professional pathway for educators and to support career progression, in line with this year’s Teacher’s Week theme.
Speaking at the launch of the 35th Teacher’s Week on Wednesday, Minister for Education Dr Justin Valentin said the theme ‘The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want’ highlights a pressing global challenge: reversing the teacher shortage. ‘In Seychelles, we recognise that quality education begins with empowered, competent, and motivated teachers,’ he said.
The minister noted that the new framework celebrates excellence in teaching, supports career progression, and reinforces the dignity and professionalism of the teaching vocation. In line with the vision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to transform education, the ministry is working to strengthen school autonomy while expanding professional development opportunities through advanced diplomas, micro-credentials and recognition of prior learning.
Dr Valentin also commended teachers for their resilience, particularly as the ministry moves forward with secondary education reform, the enhancement of teaching and learning, and the SMART Education Strategy. Lucie Bristol, a teacher of 35 years, shared her experience at the launch, reflecting on the noble nature of the profession. Other highlights included a gospel performance by teachers from Baie Lazare primary, a poem recitation and a musical performance.
