Seychellois Youth Take Part in Civic Engagement Programme Ahead of Elections

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The United States Embassy and American Space, in partnership with the Seychelles National Youth Council and Citizens Democracy Watch Seychelles, hosted a youth civic engagement programme on Saturday aimed at giving Seychellois young people a stronger grasp of democracy and the importance of active, informed participation.

The session, led by facilitators from the partner organisations, walked participants through the fundamentals of the electoral process, the role of key institutions, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Organisers said the initiative was particularly important in the final days before the general election, as young people prepare to cast their ballots.

Facilitators encouraged the young people in attendance to ask questions, share their views, and to understand that democracy is more than voting — it is also about holding leaders accountable between elections, contributing to community life, and engaging constructively in public debate.

Partners said the programme is part of a wider civic education effort in the run-up to polling day, and pledged to continue working with youth organisations in the coming months to sustain engagement beyond the election. The event was attended by youth leaders, students and representatives of civil society groups.
