New Principal Secretary for Trade Appointed

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Office of the President yesterday announced the appointment of a new Principal Secretary for Trade, effective immediately. The appointment is part of the government’s ongoing effort to strengthen the country’s trade administration and to support the diversification of the economy, particularly in light of the country’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The new PS for Trade brings a wealth of experience in trade policy, negotiations, and economic diplomacy, having served in various senior positions in government and at international organisations. The appointee will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the national trade policy, coordinating with regional and international partners, and ensuring that the country’s interests are protected in trade negotiations.

The new PS will also oversee the work of the Trade Department, including the issuance of certificates of origin, the administration of trade agreements, and the implementation of the National Trade Policy. The government has also committed to providing the necessary resources to enable the department to fulfil its mandate effectively. The appointee takes over from the previous PS for Trade, who has been reassigned to another ministry. The appointment comes as Seychelles continues to negotiate new trade agreements with partners in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and as the country prepares to take on a more active role in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
