Fisheries Ministry Honours Long-Serving Staff at Awards Ceremony

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy yesterday held a special ceremony to honour long-serving members of staff who have dedicated decades of service to the public sector. Among those awarded were Michaud from the Department of Fisheries Maritime Academy, awarded for more than 30 years of service, and several others from the Ministry of Information, the Seychelles National Printing Company, the Seychelles Housing Development Corporation, the Housing Finance Company, and Immigration, supporting senior officials since 1984.

One of the longest-serving staff members, who joined the Seychelles Fishing Authority in 1984, shared his reflections on a career that has spanned more than four decades across multiple ministries, including Environment, Foreign Affairs, and Finance. ‘I never woke up not wanting to go to work, especially with the people you work with. People have expectations but one needs to be realistic. Do not expect more than what you can deliver, and remember that everyone is doing their best. With age, you become a bit more realistic,’ he said. He also pointed out that the organisation had benefited from staff who served for 35 years and above, including the principal secretary for the Department of Fisheries.

The principal secretary said he was extremely proud of all the staff and their willingness to put in the hard work necessary to make multiple aspects of the ministry function effectively. He thanked President Ramkalawan, who cheered on the honourees, saying, ‘Often, the head of state will applaud you all for sticking around and being serious in your career. The work of the ministry is doing well and there is no reason for him to be anything but proud of all of you.’ He also noted that the work builds a certain toughness that allows staff to handle the frustrations and challenges that come with public service.
