Artists Invited to Embellish Bicentenary and Unity Monuments

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts has called on artists to bring their creative talents to a special project to enhance two iconic national monuments in celebration of National Day, namely the Bicentenary Monument and the Unity Monument. The initiative, announced by the institute’s secretary general David André, invites artists to embellish the two monuments through decorative painting.

The project is in collaboration with the National Arts and Crafts Council (NACC) and the Seychelles Institute of Art and Design (SIAD). Speaking during a press conference at the Seychelles National Library, Mr André said the goal is to bring more character and vibrancy to these important monuments ahead of National Day on June 29. ‘We want to bring some character to these monuments, it will also bring some colour towards the monuments ahead of this year’s National Day,’ Mr André shared.

The initiative forms part of a wider programme of cultural activities leading up to National Day, which is one of the most significant dates on the country’s calendar. The Bicentenary Monument, located in Victoria, marks 200 years of the city, while the Unity Monument symbolises the unity of the Seychellois people. The decorative painting project is expected to be completed in time for the official National Day celebrations, with artists encouraged to submit their proposals through the National Arts and Crafts Council.
