VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Wavel Ramkalawan has called on social workers to continue being dynamic agents of change as the country undertakes bold and modern initiatives to tackle social issues. In a message on the occasion of World Social Work Day, celebrated this year under the theme ‘Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing’, the President said the day is an opportune moment for social workers to raise awareness of their contributions towards individuals, families and the wider society.
The President said this year’s Social Work Day, celebrated on March 18, is the most important day of the year, bringing social workers worldwide together to celebrate the achievements of the profession. He noted that Seychelles, being open to the world, has not been spared from negative influences affecting its social fabric, and that more than ever, the country needs individuals committed to making a difference in the lives of people within their communities.
The President called on all sectors of society to play a more significant role in strengthening intergenerational solidarity, as society depends on positive role models for families and children. He said the government, through the Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs, will continue to listen to the needs of social workers and consider policies to incentivise them, so they remain in the line of work and continue to attract new talents. The President wished all social workers, past and present, a Happy Social Work Day.
