VICTORIA, Seychelles — Parliamentarians of Seychelles, together with the youth parliament, are participating in the first-ever workshop organised by the Parliamentarians for Climate Finance project, an international cross-party network of members of Congress and Parliament. The two-day session at the Savoy Resort starts today, focused on attracting climate finance to Seychelles and the wider region.
The Parliamentarians for Climate Finance project is designed to support lawmakers in 18 African countries — Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe — in mobilising climate finance and implementing policies that accelerate the transition to renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. It is led by the Climate Parliament and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, with support from the Green Climate Fund.
Ahead of the workshop, a delegation paid a courtesy visit to President Wavel Ramkalawan at State House. Speaking to the local media after the meeting, Sergio Misana, secretary general of the Climate Parliament, said President Ramkalawan was very supportive of the project and clearly aligned himself with the strategic direction in which Seychelles is heading. The workshop brings together parliamentarians, policymakers, investors and experts to explore how island states can lead the way in building a resilient and competitive green tourism sector, with Île de Romainville serving as a renewable energy hub and La Digue becoming a centre for ecotourism powered by clean energy.
