VICTORIA, Seychelles — Mauritian artist Mary Jane Gaspard, whose music embodies the power and finesse of contemporary seggae, is currently in Seychelles for two performances. Her father is the renowned segatier Jean-Claude Gaspard. The performances are being held at the invitation of Restaurant Moloko to celebrate the 57th anniversary of Mauritius’ independence alongside Mauritians living in Seychelles.
Mary Jane Gaspard has carved out a place of her own in the contemporary music of Mauritius, drawing on diverse influences that have shaped her musical identity. The genuine turn in her career came with the release of her first album in 2015, which was very well received by critics and the public. The album allowed her to establish her name on the international music scene. Sharing her musical journey, Mary Jane told the press that each generation has its own way of cultivating seggae, and she is committed to promoting her musical culture.
Yesterday, the singer met secondary school students at Belonie school for an hour of sharing and music. She sang a few pieces accompanied by the school’s music band. Medgee Nancy, the music teacher at Belonie secondary, said her school represents Mauritius for the Eco-School project, and that the school had invited a Mauritian teacher and the person in charge of the Eco-School project. ‘We had an excellent moment with the artist, and our group of musicians played a few songs with her,’ she said. The concerts are scheduled for Saturday at Moloko, celebrating the Independence anniversary of Mauritius in all its splendour.
