Seychelles National Youth Assembly Elections Begin in Secondary Schools

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles National Youth Council has commenced elections for the 20th cohort of the Seychelles National Youth Assembly (SNYA), with the process starting yesterday in secondary schools across both public and private institutions. A total of eight schools have initiated the election process thus far. Perseverance school was one of the first, with the polling taking place at around 11am, where the school had five candidates, three boys and two girls, who were anxiously awaiting the choices of their peers.

As in the previous year, students aged 14 to 17 were eligible to cast their votes. The SNYA is a flagship civic education programme run by the Seychelles National Youth Council, designed to give young people first-hand experience of democratic processes, parliamentary debate, and policy-making. Members of the assembly serve a one-year term and take part in mock sittings of the National Assembly, committee work, and community outreach.

The annual elections are designed to mirror the national electoral process, with campaigning, nominations, and voting carried out in a manner that replicates the country’s general elections. The new cohort is expected to be sworn in later this month, marking two decades of the programme’s continuous operation in Seychelles.
