Seychelles Defence Forces Women Briefed on Rights Ahead of International Women’s Day

VICTORIA, Seychelles — As part of activities to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, the Human Rights Commission yesterday hosted a workshop for female military personnel at the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) headquarters conference room in Bel Eau, highlighting their contributions, rights, responsibilities and empowerment. The event was attended by Chief of Defence Forces Major General Michael Rosette, his deputy Brigadier General Jean Atala, along with senior officers of the SDF.

Through a presentation led by the commissioner at the Seychelles Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Barbara Carolus-Andre, the women present acquired more knowledge about human rights and gender equality in the military, the roles of rights holders and duty bearers, as well as how to advocate for themselves and others. The presentation was also aimed at encouraging them to engage with the SHRC and to foster understanding in rights holders and duty bearers. ‘The theme this year for the women is Rights, Equality, and Empowerment. The theme is a call for more sensitisation and actions for the rights, equality and opportunity, so that no woman stays behind,’ said Major General Rosette.

He also highlighted that the women in uniform do not only serve in the defence forces, but they are the future of their institution, the nation and the future generation. He noted that as leaders of the armed forces, they will provide the necessary support to make this possible. Principal Counsellor at the SDF, Beryl Dodin, said they organised the session to enhance women’s knowledge on their rights. ‘Today we invited the SHRC to engage in a discussion on human rights, as it aligns closely with our theme of rights, equality, and empowerment. We wanted to also teach them ways in which they can empower themselves as individuals,’ added Mrs Dodin.
