Seychelles Judiciary and University of Seychelles Launch Paralegal Certificate Course

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Judiciary of Seychelles and the University of Seychelles (UniSey) have launched a one-year Paralegal Studies Certificate course, the first programme of its kind for support staff working in the islands’ legal system.

The course was launched by Dr Michael Hall, Dean of Faculty of Business and Sustainable Development, at a ceremony at the Palais De Justice auditorium in Ile Du Port yesterday morning. The first cohort comprises ten court reporters and court interpreters. A paralegal is trained in subsidiary legal matters but is not fully qualified as a lawyer; the course has been developed for staff with an interest in law who do not wish to become attorneys.

Chief Justice Rony Govinden, who attended the launch with the vice-chancellor of UniSey, Joëlle Perreau, said the partnership marked a significant step towards enhancing the professional development of judiciary support staff. He urged the government to continue supporting the programme, which he described as very important for the creation of a well-equipped judiciary capable of meeting the demands of an evolving legal landscape.
