VICTORIA — On April 18, 2026, Seychelles joins the global community in celebrating the International Day for Monuments and Sites under the theme: “Building resilience in Seychelles in times of conflict and crisis: Living heritage as strength, identity and response”.
Berthilda Walter of the Seychelles National Heritage Resource Council highlighted that heritage is “far more than a legacy; it is a sacred national trust”. The day’s activities emphasize the importance of safeguarding the nation’s “living heritage”—traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and historical sites—as a foundation for national identity and a practical resource during times of crisis.
While the Government has implemented various initiatives to support cultural resilience, officials noted a continued need for expanded capacity building, increased human resources, and sustained public awareness to ensure that Seychelles’ heritage remains a sustainable asset for future generations. One such preservation effort highlighted is the ongoing protection of Victoria’s historical coral-topped dry stone walls, which serve as a physical link to the capital’s architectural history.
