Airtel Seychelles Launches Africa’s First AI-Powered Spam Alert Service

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Airtel Seychelles on Tuesday announced the launch of Africa’s first artificial intelligence-powered Spam Alert Service, a free solution designed to protect customers from nuisance and fraudulent text messages. The service automatically tags suspicious SMS content with the label ‘Suspected SPAM’, giving subscribers real-time protection without requiring any downloads or subscriptions.

The launch follows Airtel Africa’s pioneering rollout earlier this year, where the AI system processed over 41 billion messages in just 5 milliseconds and flagged millions of suspected spam communications. Research shows that nine of the top 20 countries globally with the highest spam rates are in Africa, making the Seychelles launch a meaningful step in extending the same protection to local customers as smartphone penetration continues to rise.

‘This is a landmark moment for Seychelles and for Africa. The Spam Alert Service is the continent’s first AI-powered spam detection solution, and it reflects Airtel’s commitment to safeguarding our customers while leading digital innovation. We are proud to bring this pioneering service to our community,’ said Eddy Kapuku, managing director of Airtel Seychelles. The service provides dual-layer protection at both the network and IT systems level, while also maintaining a centralised database of blacklisted URLs to warn customers against malicious links.
