Seychelles National Youth Council Celebrates 20 Years of Young Citizens Movement

VICTORIA, Seychelles, The Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Young Citizens Movement with a momentous ceremony at the Seychelles Defence Academy auditorium, Ile Du Port, Perseverance yesterday afternoon. The event brought together facilitators, current and former young citizens, government officials and partners to mark two decades of the programme. The occasion also provided an opportunity for SNYC to renew its commitment to the values and objectives that have guided the movement since its inception.

The highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of the long serving facilitators, whose tireless efforts have inspired and mentored many young individuals throughout the years. Those who serve as facilitators for a staggering 20 years were Gitanne Port Louis, Brigitte Zelime, Marie Clothlide, Jeff Appasamy, Lina Matombe, Vetirie Cedras, Emmanuel Freminot, Gracia Labiche and Janette Cadeau. They received their awards from First Lady Linda Ramkalawan and SNYC’s chief executive, Albert Duncan. The standing ovation that followed the presentation of the awards was a fitting tribute to decades of voluntary service.

Elaine Rafaha Soavana was the sole recipient of the 15-year award, while Mepole Mathiot, Giane Pothin, Veruska Hoareau and Tania Edmond were recognised for their five-year service and contribution. Each of the recipients was praised for the unique contribution they have made to the personal development of countless young Seychellois. The awards ceremony highlighted the depth of experience within the movement and the lasting impact that consistent mentorship can have on successive generations of young citizens.

In his address, Mr Duncan noted that the Young Citizens Movement has grown into one of the country’s most important platforms for youth engagement. He added that the programme has helped thousands of young people develop leadership skills, civic responsibility and a sense of community service. The SNYC remains committed to expanding the reach of the movement and to ensuring that it continues to reflect the aspirations of young Seychellois.

First Lady Ramkalawan congratulated the recipients and thanked the families and communities that have supported the facilitators over the years. She noted that the work of the movement complements the national effort to build a more inclusive and caring society. As the Young Citizens Movement enters its third decade, the SNYC has announced plans to review its curriculum and to introduce new modules on environmental stewardship, digital literacy and entrepreneurship. The next phase of the programme is expected to be rolled out in the second half of the year.
