National Grants Awards R2.1 Million to Six Community Projects

VICTORIA, Seychelles, The National Grants Committee has awarded a further R2,114,695.00 towards six projects under the 2024 National Grants Cycle, adding up to 14 successful applicants. The total appropriated budget for 2024 stands at R9,050,000.00. Last month, eight projects benefitted from the scheme for a total sum of R3,328,625.00. The six new projects bring the grand total of both batches to R5,443,320.00, leaving the remaining balance available for future calls.

The recipients include the Green Generation Seychelles, which is receiving a sum of R267,925.00. The fund will be used to raise awareness on environmental issues and influence Baie Lazare residents in a positive way to contribute to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment by adopting the 3R concept of waste management. The committee noted that the project aligns closely with national priorities around environmental stewardship and community engagement in waste reduction across the district and beyond.

The Silhouette Foundation has been granted R441,950.00 to build the capacity of conservation rangers and foster stewardship through the establishment of a Wildlife Conservation Academy and a public wildlife discovery centre on Silhouette Island. The project is expected to create new training opportunities for young Seychellois interested in conservation careers, while also boosting eco-tourism on the island. The foundation will partner with international conservation bodies to develop the curriculum and ensure the training meets global standards for wildlife management and protection.

The HOPE Foundation will be improving the quality of life for vulnerable families under a separate allocation, while other approved projects cover areas such as youth empowerment, heritage preservation and small-business development. The committee said the second call for proposals is set for March 11, when more organisations will be invited to submit applications for the remaining funds in the 2024 budget. Each application will be assessed on its merits and its expected contribution to community wellbeing and national priorities.

Applicants are encouraged to review the published guidelines carefully and to align their proposals with national development priorities. The committee will assess submissions on the basis of impact, sustainability and community reach. Successful projects from the second round are expected to be announced later in the year, allowing time for implementation before the end of the budget cycle and giving communities the opportunity to benefit from the funded activities.
