National Assembly Reopens with Speaker Mancienne Reflecting on 2023

VICTORIA, Seychelles, Despite the tragedies recorded, the year 2023 should also be celebrated, said Speaker Roger Mancienne. He was speaking at the reopening of the National Assembly yesterday afternoon in the absence of United Seychelles party members. This was done in accordance with Seychelles’ parliamentary procedure. The Speaker used the occasion to reflect on both the achievements and challenges of the past year.

When welcoming the members, Speaker Mancienne said although they were resuming their work after some tragic events late last year, which included the death of a colleague and the December 7 disasters, 2023 should also be celebrated for the work done. He noted that the parliament had made significant progress on key legislation despite the difficult circumstances. The reopening ceremony was attended by government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.

Speaker Mancienne said since they started their mandate on October 28, 2020, the parliament has played its role in the country’s governance and his wish is to see it continue along that same line, so they would remain faithful to the people. He expressed confidence that the current cohort would build on the achievements of previous years. The Speaker also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing members and welcomed new proportionsately elected members to the assembly.

The reopening of the National Assembly marks the beginning of a new legislative session, with several important bills expected to be debated in the coming months. The assembly will also oversee the implementation of the government’s reform agenda, including proposed constitutional amendments. Members of the assembly are expected to engage constructively on the issues facing the country.

As the assembly resumes its work, public attention will be focused on how lawmakers address the challenges facing Seychelles, from economic recovery to social cohesion. The Speaker’s call for unity and reflection sets the tone for the session ahead. Both government and opposition members are expected to play their part in shaping the country’s legislative agenda in the months to come.
