VICTORIA, Seychelles, In recognition of World Social Justice Day, the profile of Edelcia Esparon, a determined Seychellois woman who has risen from housekeeper to court orderly to law clerk, is being shared. Her story exemplifies the values of perseverance and lifelong learning that the day seeks to highlight. Esparon’s journey shows what can be achieved through dedication and a willingness to seize opportunities as they arise.
I’m someone who likes to learn, I have a naturally curious mind. Even as a housekeeper, I did my job with all my heart and to the best of my ability because I knew this role was important. As I did so, I also observed how the receptionist would do her job, and offered to fill in when she was away, she said. Her curiosity and proactive approach set her apart from her peers and caught the attention of her supervisors.
Ms Esparon explained that her interest in the legal field grew over time as she took on new responsibilities within the court system. Starting as a housekeeper, she was soon given the opportunity to work as a court orderly, a role that brought her into daily contact with the workings of the justice system. She embraced the chance to learn from lawyers, clerks, and judges who passed through the courthouse.
Her supervisors quickly recognised her aptitude and willingness to take on additional tasks. She was encouraged to apply for further training, and eventually secured a position as a law clerk, a role that combines administrative support with substantive legal work. The transition required significant study and adjustment, but Ms Esparon met the challenge with the same determination she had shown throughout her career.
Today, Ms Esparon is a respected member of the court’s administrative team, known for her thoroughness and her commitment to ensuring that justice is served efficiently. She continues to encourage others, particularly young women, to pursue their interests and take advantage of every opportunity for growth. Her message on World Social Justice Day is simple: with hard work and a curious mind, anyone can rise above their circumstances.
