VICTORIA, Seychelles — The rollout of mobile fibre infrastructure is expanding rapidly across the islands, bringing high-speed broadband to more homes, businesses, and public institutions than ever before. The project represents a major investment in the country’s digital backbone, designed to support the growing demand for connectivity and to enable the next generation of digital services.
According to telecommunications providers, the rollout has covered a significant portion of Mahe, with work continuing in Praslin and La Digue. The infrastructure delivers fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-premises connectivity, supporting speeds far in excess of what is possible with older copper-based networks. Officials said the expansion reflects strong demand for high-quality broadband and the strategic importance of digital infrastructure to the national economy.
According to the Department of Information Communications Technology, the rollout is being supported by government policy aimed at accelerating the deployment of modern networks. The department has worked with providers to streamline approvals, coordinate civil works, and ensure that the rollout reaches all communities, including those in more remote areas. Investment in mobile fibre is expected to enhance the country’s competitiveness and to support the development of new digital industries.
The expanded fibre network is expected to enable a wide range of new services, including high-definition video streaming, cloud computing, smart home applications, and advanced telemedicine. Educational institutions and healthcare facilities are among the priority users, with connections enabling improved access to remote learning and specialist medical services. The rollout forms a key part of the country’s broader digital transformation agenda and its vision for a connected future.
