VICTORIA, Seychelles — As Seychelles joins the world in celebrating World Environment Day 2026, Minister for Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources Marie-May Jeremie has called for collective action to protect the nation’s natural heritage. This year’s theme, ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future’, calls upon all to recognise that nature is not only increasingly threatened by climate change, but that it also provides some of the most effective solutions for addressing the climate crisis.
From coral reefs and mangroves to forests and seagrass meadows, nature protects shores, stores carbon, supports biodiversity, and sustains the livelihoods of the people. As Seychellois, we have always shared a close connection with the natural environment. Our oceans, beaches, mountains, and unique biodiversity are a source of pride and an integral part of national heritage. Protecting these natural assets is therefore not simply an environmental responsibility, it is an investment in the future and in the wellbeing of generations to come.
This year’s World Environment Day also serves as a call to action in order to address the triple planetary crisis: climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss. While at the same time recognising the growing unsustainable consumption patterns placing increasing pressure on the environment. Addressing these challenges requires collective effort and commitment from all sectors of society.
With recent impacts felt from the crisis in the Middle East, there is a stark reminder more than ever that we must accelerate the transition towards renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste generation, and embrace more sustainable practices in homes, workplaces, schools, and communities. These actions not only help reduce environmental footprint but also strengthen resilience and contribute to a greener and more sustainable Seychelles.
The global campaign for World Environment Day 2026 reminds us that we need to turn commitment into action and ambition into results. Let us therefore draw inspiration from nature and work together to build a future that is cleaner, greener, more resilient, and more sustainable. Let us recognise that the actions we take today will determine the future we leave to generations yet to come.
Minister Jeremie wished all Seychellois a Happy World Environment Day 2026.
