Mauritius Approves Opening of Seychelles High Commission in Port Louis

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Government of Mauritius has formally approved the opening of a Seychelles High Commission in Port Louis, marking a significant step in strengthening diplomatic ties between the two Indian Ocean nations.

The Mauritian Council of Ministers gave its approval on Friday following a request from the Government of Seychelles. The decision follows March discussions during President Patrick Herminie’s visit to Mauritius, where both countries agreed to open high commissions in each other’s capitals.

The Mauritian government also approved the nomination of Nicholas Gerard Prea as the first resident High Commissioner of Seychelles to Mauritius. Mr Prea served as Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles from 2018 to 2020.

The establishment of reciprocal high commissions represents a milestone in bilateral relations, moving beyond resident ambassadors to full diplomatic missions. This development underscores the shared commitment to deepening cooperation between the neighbouring island nations on matters of mutual interest.

The move follows President Herminie’s March 2026 State Visit to Mauritius, during which both countries signed the visa waiver agreement allowing visa-free travel for citizens of both nations.

The high commission will serve as the primary diplomatic channel for advancing Seychelles interests in Mauritius and coordinating bilateral cooperation across sectors including trade, culture, education, and regional security.
