Vice-President Pillay Tells Assembly Housing Demand Will Continue Exceeding Supply
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Vice-President Sebastien Pillay has informed the National Assembly that demand for housing in Seychelles will continue to exceed the number of homes the government can provide, as five thousand twenty-seven applicants presently await housing allocation through the Home Savings Scheme.
Appearing before the Assembly alongside Secretary of State for Lands and Housing Joseph François, Principal Secretary for Housing Jude Florentine, and other officials, Pillay outlined current constraints while detailing government efforts to expand housing availability through multiple programmes.
Figures shared show that of the five thousand twenty-seven applicants with Housing Finance Company accounts, three thousand five hundred twenty-eight are in good standing with regular contributions. Two thousand six hundred four applicants are contributing towards affordable housing, seven hundred ninety-eight towards mid-range condominiums, and one hundred twenty-six towards premium products.
Statistics reveal savings shortfalls among many applicants: three thousand one hundred ninety-four have accumulated less than fifty thousand rupees, while nine hundred eighty-six have exceeded fifty thousand and six hundred twenty-three have accumulated over one hundred thousand rupees.
The government aims to complete four hundred thirty houses by year end. Pillay outlined plans to transition from affordable housing toward self-financing models in partnership with district authorities, acknowledging that multiple solutions are being explored simultaneously.
On land distribution, Pillay revealed that thirteen applicants from the Grand Anse Mahé district have reactivated their land applications between 2017 and 2017 for the Barbar-ons Land Bank Phase 4 project, which includes fifteen plots.
