BEIJING, China — Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora Barry Faure has concluded his first official visit to Beijing in his current ministerial capacity, securing Chinese President Xi Jinping’s cordial invitation for President Patrick Herminie to undertake a State Visit to China during the first quarter of 2027 as the pinnacle of Seychelles’ fiftieth independence anniversary celebrations.
The historic visit forms a cornerstone of activities commemorating five decades of diplomatic ties between the two nations, a landmark partnership forged on June 30, 1976, just one day after Seychelles gained independence. During extensive bilateral talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, discussions focused heavily on preparations for the upcoming presidential visit and avenues for deepening bilateral cooperation.
The delegation included Anne Lafortune, Seychelles’ Ambassador to China, and Jean-Luc Lai Lam, Tourism Attaché at the Seychelles embassy. Their engagements reinforced mutual commitments to deepening cooperation in tourism, cultural exchange, and strategic socio-economic development.
Faure also met with chairman Chen Xiaodong of the China International Development Cooperation Agency, during which they signed an exchange of letters on the dispatch of a team of Chinese experts to Seychelles to carry out preparatory technical feasibility studies and on-site inspections for social, economic, and infrastructure projects.
They hailed successful cooperation between the two countries as they celebrate fifty years of diplomatic relations, discussing plans for new projects being considered.
The visit underscores a model partnership between sovereign equals despite differences in geographic size, economic scale, and global geopolitical weight.
