VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Patrick Herminie has signalled a renewed focus on diplomatic engagement with Russia, marking a notable shift in the country’s foreign policy posture. The move is part of broader efforts to diversify international partnerships and strengthen bilateral cooperation across trade, education, and environmental sectors. According to officials at State House, the renewed engagement builds on the longstanding diplomatic relations between the two countries established in 1976.
The initiative includes planned high-level exchanges and the resumption of cultural and economic cooperation programmes that had been scaled back in previous years. Officials said the engagement aims to open new opportunities for Seychellois students, professionals, and businesses while reinforcing the country’s non-aligned foreign policy tradition. The approach reflects Seychelles’ strategy of maintaining balanced relations with global partners.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the new engagement will focus on areas of mutual interest including marine conservation, fisheries management, and climate resilience. Both nations have identified the blue economy as a key area for future collaboration, with Russia’s expertise in ocean science complementing Seychelles’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean. The partnership also includes dialogue on counter-piracy and maritime security.
The move has been welcomed by business leaders in Seychelles who see potential for increased trade and investment. Officials noted that the relationship will be pursued transparently and in line with the country’s international obligations. Further announcements on specific cooperation agreements are expected in the coming months.
