Seychelles and China mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in evening of culture and diplomacy

An evening of culture and diplomacy unfolded at the Savoy Resort, Beau Vallon, as Seychelles and China marked 50 years of diplomatic relations in the presence of the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie.
The President was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Veronique Herminie. Also in attendance were the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles, Sebastien Pillay, the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Han Zheng, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Seychelles, Her Excellency Lin Nan, as well as high level dignitaries, government officials and invited guests.
Delivering the proposed toast, Vice President Pillay underscored the significance of the milestone, noting that diplomatic relations between Seychelles and China were established on 30 June 1976, shortly after Seychelles’ independence.
“This milestone offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the course of our bilateral relations, but also to recognise the enduring principles and shared understanding that have sustained them over time,” he stated.
The commemorative event brought together both nations to reflect on five decades of cooperation, mutual respect and shared development, while reaffirming a continued commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
Vice President Pillay highlighted that the partnership has remained anchored in key principles, including respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful coexistence and a firm commitment to multilateralism. He further reaffirmed Seychelles’ adherence to the One China Policy, noting that it reflects the country’s consistent position in favour of territorial integrity and a stable international order grounded in international law.
Vice President Pillay also emphasised the tangible benefits of cooperation, describing China as “a valued and reliable partner” in Seychelles’ development. “Its contributions have supported the expansion and modernisation of key infrastructure, strengthened public services, and enhanced our national capacity in areas essential to sustainable development,” he said.
He noted that the partnership continues to evolve in response to emerging priorities, with growing collaboration in areas such as renewable energy, climate adaptation, disaster risk management, digital transformation and the development of the blue economy.
Addressing the gathering, Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Han Zheng, described the relationship between the two countries as a model of mutual respect and cooperation between nations of different sizes.
“The relationship between China and Seychelles serves as a model of sincere friendship, equality, mutual assistance, and win win cooperation between large and small countries,” he stated.
He highlighted the longstanding historical ties between the two nations, noting that diplomatic relations were established on the second day of Seychelles’ independence, laying the foundation for an enduring partnership.
The Chinese Vice President further noted that cooperation between the two countries has expanded significantly over the years, evolving from traditional sectors into new areas including green, blue and digital development.
He pointed to key infrastructure projects supported by China, including the National Assembly building, the Palace of Justice and the SBC Broadcast Centre, as visible symbols of the partnership.
“China stands ready to work with Seychelles to deepen political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, and enhance people to people connectivity,” he added.
The event also highlighted the importance of people to people exchanges, with both sides acknowledging the contribution of the Chinese community in Seychelles and the growing number of Seychellois students and professionals trained in China.
Cultural performances formed a central part of the evening’s programme, showcasing the richness of both Seychellois and Chinese heritage through dance and musical presentations, including performances by the Seychelles National Choir.
As Seychelles and China mark this golden jubilee, both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing cooperation and ensuring that the partnership continues to deliver meaningful and lasting benefits for their peoples.
