VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles is preparing to host the 30th Confederation of African Volleyball Zone 7 Club Championship from February 27 to March 7, with the country’s domestic leagues temporarily paused ahead of the regional showdown, while Island Boys and Island Girls currently lead their respective divisions in the Seychelles Volleyball Federation’s Division Two leagues. The upcoming tournament marks a significant moment for volleyball in Seychelles, as the country takes on the responsibility of hosting one of the premier club competitions in the African volleyball calendar across more than a week of fixtures.
Hosting the CAVB Zone 7 Championship carries considerable significance beyond sport, as it showcases Seychelles’ organisational capacity on a regional stage, brings together elite clubs from across the zone, and provides Seychellois players and fans with direct exposure to the highest level of club volleyball in the Indian Ocean and East African region. The tournament also serves as a platform for local clubs to benchmark their performance against regional counterparts and build experience that can feed back into domestic league standards.
In the men’s Division Two, Island Boys have been dominant throughout the season with a perfect record of seven wins from seven matches, accumulating 20 points from 21 sets won against just three conceded. Serve-Ival sit second with six wins and 17 points, while Anse Royale Boys occupy third place with five victories and 15 points. In the women’s Division Two, Island Girls and Air Waves Sisters share top spot on 17 points each, with Island Girls winning 20 sets and Air Waves Sisters 18, ahead of Anse Aux Pins Sisters in third place on 16 points and Espoir A in fourth with 14 points.
Meanwhile, City Ladies Volleyball Club have received brand new custom kits from local online platform JOBO.sc in a one-year sponsorship partnership, with the kits set to make their debut at the Zone 7 Championship. The kits, designed by a local designer, include home and away match sets, pre-match warm-up shirts, team shirts for players and management, and fans t-shirts. JOBO.sc founder and chief executive Herve Chang-Yunn said the company was proud to invest in local athletes and showcase Seychellois talent with pride, while City Ladies president Ken Maria described the partnership as a statement of belief in the club’s vision and a motivation to perform at the highest level and represent Seychelles with distinction.
The pause in league fixtures ahead of the Zone 7 Championship gives teams an opportunity to regroup and prepare their squads, with Island Boys and Island Girls aiming to carry their league-leading form into the second round of domestic competition once the regional tournament concludes. Clubs in the lower half of the tables will hope the break provides time to address the consistency issues that have separated them from the leading sides.
As Seychelles readies itself to welcome volleyball clubs from across the region, the hosting of the 30th CAVB Zone 7 Championship represents a proud moment for the sport and for the nation’s ongoing development as a regional sporting hub.
