Minister Faure meets with Special Envoy of Austria to discuss UNSC bid

Mr. Barry Faure, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Seychelles, met with H.E. Herbert Scheibner, Special Envoy of Austria and former Minister of Defence, and discussed Austria’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The Special Envoy presented Austria’s vision for the UNSC, noting the need to strengthen dialogue with African nations and to reform the UNSC to ensure permanent seats on the Council for the African Continent. Austria also reaffirmed that multilateral cooperation is essential to solving global challenges.

The Minister and the Special Envoy agreed on the importance of bringing the voice and interests of small and medium-sized States to key international organisations such as the UNSC. The discussions also centered on mutual commitments to peace and security, and sustainable development.

Austria is contending for one of the two non-permanent seats within the Western European and Others Group of the UNSC, alongside fellow candidates Germany and Portugal, and elections are due in June 2026.
