Ambassador Ian Madeleine, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, met with Ambassador Rita Laranjinha, Portugal’s Special Envoy for Africa, in the context of Portugal’s bid for election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, on Thursday 5 February 2026.

Ambassador Laranjinha outlined the priorities and vision guiding Portugal’s candidature, as well as the approach it would bring to the Council if elected. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss how Portugal envisages exercising its responsibilities on the Council, including its engagement with non-permanent and small states.

Both sides also exchanged views on Seychelles – Portugal relations.

Elections to the Security Council will be held in June 2026.
