Discussions held on strengthening IFRC presence and Red Cross framework in Seychelles

The Head of Country Cluster Delegation of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), Ms. Maria Mercedes Martinez paid a visit to Ambassador Ian Madeleine, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora on Wednesday 4 February 2026.

During the meeting, Ms. Martinez and Ambassador Madeleine touched on the absence of an IFRC office in the Seychelles and the requirements needed for the establishment of the entity in the country. The replacement and modernisation of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) Act was also discussed, with reference to limitations in the Society’s work arising from gaps in the current Act.

Ms. Martinez and her team stressed that an in-country presence would allow faster mobilisation and funding, as well as technical support particularly for anticipatory action, early warning systems and pre-disaster financing.

Ms. Martinez was accompanied by Ms. Marie-May Esparon, Secretary General of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles and other RCSS senior representatives.
