VICTORIA, Seychelles — UniSey major renovations will commence this month as the University of Seychelles undertakes extensive infrastructure upgrades at its Anse Royale campus lasting four to six months. Vice-Chancellor Joëlle Perreau announced the works during a media briefing yesterday, emphasising the urgent need to address long-standing facility challenges.
The significance of these UniSey major renovations extends to the entire education sector, as the university serves as the primary institution for higher learning in Seychelles. With the academic year scheduled to begin in February, ensuring safe and functional facilities for students and staff represents a critical priority for national educational development. The improvements will create modern learning environments that meet current standards and support quality tertiary education.
The renovation project follows a recent visit by President Patrick Herminie, who identified priority areas requiring urgent attention. These include students’ toilet facilities and the roofing structure, which has caused leakages in parts of the building. Concerns have also been raised about loose concrete sections that could pose safety risks. The government has allocated R10 million to support the project, with the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency overseeing the works under Vice-President Sebastian Pillay’s directive.
The main university building was constructed in 1983 and has only seen minor upgrades over the past four decades. Construction contractor Rafa Builders has been appointed to carry out the renovations, which officially began on January 19. To minimise disruption, operations will continue primarily at the Mont Fleuri campus, with some staff working remotely during the renovation period.
The implications of these renovations will transform the university experience for students and faculty alike. Classes will be held at Mont Fleuri or online depending on size and requirements, with larger groups using the Manchester Theatre. UniSey is also exploring collaboration with the Seychelles Institute of Distance and Open Learning and the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education to secure additional venues. Completion could come sooner than the projected six-month timeframe.
