Ministries Collaborate on Youth and Sports Development

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Youth and sports development efforts at district level were strengthened following a joint meeting between the Ministry of Local Government and Inner Islands and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The meeting held on January 21 was attended by Minister Eveline Rose and Minister Kalsey Belle along with senior officials from both ministries. Discussions focused on setting shared priorities and exploring collaborative approaches to advance programmes.

This inter-ministerial collaboration matters significantly for ordinary Seychellois families. District-level sports facilities and youth programmes provide essential outlets for young people to develop skills, stay healthy, and build community connections. By coordinating efforts between ministries, the government aims to maximise resources and ensure that youth and sports development reaches every district effectively. The initiative supports national goals for healthier lifestyles and stronger communities.

The meeting examined the future of district sports infrastructure, with both sides agreeing on the need to modernise and redevelop existing facilities. They discussed ensuring that any redevelopment is safe, inclusive and sustainable while supporting national goals for sports development. Youth involvement at district level was another key focus, with discussions on strengthening programmes that encourage young people to take part in sports, adopt healthier lifestyles and benefit from early talent identification.

Structured planning and clearly defined district roles were highlighted as essential for ensuring these initiatives are effective and well coordinated. Challenges related to day-to-day management of district sports facilities were raised, including maintenance, scheduling and shared use. Proposed solutions included clearer management arrangements, better coordination among partners, and strengthening the capacity of district-level teams responsible for facility oversight.

Looking ahead, the two ministries agreed to prioritise improved collaboration mechanisms, progress planning for sports facility redevelopment, enhance district sports initiatives and clarify responsibilities at all levels. Regular follow-up meetings will be held to assess progress and ensure shared objectives remain aligned. Both ministries described the discussions as constructive and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advance youth and sports development in districts for the benefit of communities across Seychelles.

The joint approach signals a renewed government commitment to investing in the nation’s young people.
