Young Seychellois Sailors Compete at India International Youth Sailing Championships

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles sailors India championship campaign commenced yesterday as three young Seychellois competitors entered the SDAT ASAF International Youth Sailing Championship 2026 in Chennai. Elisha Moustache, Melchior Constance, and Dominic Esparon are among 117 registered sailors from 13 nations and nine clubs competing across five elite youth classes.

The championships, which started yesterday and will conclude on January 10, also serve as the Asian Sailing Federation Cup and the 11th India International Regatta. This dual-ranking event is recognised by both the Yachting Association of India and the Asian Sailing Federation, bringing together sailors from India and several countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe for a week of high-quality competitive sailing.

The three local sailors are being accompanied by coach Alain Alcindor and team leader Alison Hoareau. The event was formally inaugurated at the Timber Pond, Chennai Port, marking the ceremonial commencement of one of India’s premier international sailing events. The championships are hosted by the TamilNadu Sailing Association with support from the Sports Development Authority of TamilNadu.

Following the flag-off by Inspector General Datwinder Singh Saini, commander of Coast Guard Region East, the race committee conducted the official practice race, giving sailors and officials an opportunity to test conditions. Winds averaged 12 knots, gusting up to 15 knots, presenting the fleet with typically demanding Chennai conditions.

Each class recorded an average race duration of approximately 70 minutes. While many experienced sailors relished the conditions that make Chennai both challenging and exciting, some younger sailors competing in Chennai for the first time were seen returning ashore to huddle with their coaches, discussing strategies and techniques for handling the swell and current.

Seychelles sailors India championship participation strengthens bilateral sporting ties and provides valuable international experience for young athletes.
