Seychelles Catholic Church Prepares for New Bishop as Alain Harel Steps Down

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Seychelles is preparing to welcome a new bishop as Monseigneur Alain Harel steps down after reaching the canonical retirement age of 75. The transition marks a significant moment in the nation’s ecclesiastical history and comes as Seychellois society navigates major political and social changes.

Mgr Harel submitted his resignation to the Holy See in June 2025 when he turned 75, as required under canon law. The process for designating his successor is officially underway. In an interview reflecting on this transitional period, the outgoing bishop emphasised the importance of hope, responsibility, and fraternity for the nation.

Over the past year, the Catholic Church in Seychelles completed its Synod, which gathered delegates from across archipelagos to set priorities. Key focus areas include supporting families, youth, children, and extending solidarity to the less privileged. Mgr Harel has consistently urged citizens to transcend political divisions and work toward the common good.

Seychelles’ Catholic community has a long history intertwined with the nation’s development. The Church has played a vital role in education, social welfare, and community cohesion since the colonial era. Recent presidential and legislative elections have underscored the need for unity, a message the bishop has amplified from a faith-based perspective.

The appointment of a new bishop is expected to be finalised during 2026. This leadership change comes as the Church seeks to remain relevant in an increasingly secular democracy while continuing its pastoral mission. Mgr Harel’s message resonates as a call to collective responsibility regardless of religious affiliation.

The transition represents a new chapter for the Seychelles Catholic Church.
