Anse Aux Pins Children Learn Traditional Fishing Skills Through SFA and EU Initiative

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Ten children from the Anse Aux Pins district were given a rare and exciting opportunity over the weekend to step into the shoes of traditional Seychellois fishers and experience hands-on fundamental fishing techniques. The activity was organised by the Anse Aux Pins Fishers Association, with the aim of sparking curiosity and nurturing a lasting interest in the fisheries sector.

Practical demonstrations followed, with the children exploring and using various types of fishing gear such as rods, nets, and lines. They learned how to construct their own fish traps using environmentally friendly materials, ensuring that they understand sustainable practices from an early age. Additionally, they received instruction on how to prepare different types of bait suited for various fish species.

Speaking to the media, the vice-chairman of the association, Theophane Estro, explained that the activity was part of a broader collaboration between the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) and the European Union. ‘We started the activity on Saturday with theory, and today on Sunday we are doing practical,’ he said, adding that similar activities are being conducted in other districts that have associations.
