VICTORIA, Seychelles — Skywatchers across Seychelles will be treated to a dazzling celestial event on Thursday evening, December 4, 2025, as the Cold Moon rises, doubling as the final supermoon of the year. A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.
This December’s Cold Moon will shine with extra brilliance, closing out the year’s series of supermoons in spectacular fashion. The December full moon has long been called the Cold Moon, a name rooted in Native American and European traditions that mark the arrival of winter’s long, dark nights. Other names include the Snow Moon and the Long Night Moon, all reflecting the seasonal character of the year’s final full moon.
Residents are encouraged to look to the skies after sunset on Thursday, weather permitting, to catch a clear view. Astronomers note that supermoons can appear up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than a typical full moon, providing excellent viewing conditions for casual observers and photography enthusiasts alike. The event also marks the final supermoon of 2025, after three earlier supermoons earlier in the year.
