President Herminie Leads Delegation to Assomption to Reiterate Project Stop Order

VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Dr Patrick Herminie and Vice-President Sebastien Pillay led a high-level delegation to Assomption Island on Monday to underline the government’s firm position on the stop notice issued against the developers of the luxury tourism project on the island. The visit followed the President’s announcement in the National Assembly on November 14 that the Seychelles Planning Authority had, on his instructions, halted all works on the project due to concerns over legal compliance, biosecurity, and the overall development process.

Very few workers were seen on the island and no construction activity was taking place, a direct result of the stop notice. The President made clear that the government will not allow any further activity until all requirements are met. ‘Assomption today is a serious point of contention,’ he said, adding that for an informed decision to be made, it is important for the authorities to see and have knowledge of what is happening on the ground.

The President also confirmed that a commission of inquiry, led by former Chief Justice Mathilda Twomey, was established last Friday to examine the project. The delegation’s visit and the inquiry are intended to clarify the legal and environmental position surrounding the development, and to ensure that any future activity on the island meets national standards and protects Seychelles’ ecological interests.
