VICTORIA, Seychelles — The outgoing ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Republic of Seychelles, Martha Hernández Caneiro, paid a farewell visit to President Patrick Herminie on Tuesday afternoon at State House. Ambassador Hernández Caneiro was accompanied by Minister Counsellor of the Cuban embassy, Tomás Méndez Parra. Also present were the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Ambassador Barry Faure, and principal secretary, Ambassador Ian Madeleine.
Speaking to the media, Ambassador Hernández Caneiro highlighted discussions on the 48 years of cooperation and friendship between Cuba and Seychelles, as well as ways to further strengthen ties. She noted the importance of people-to-people exchanges and Cuba’s longstanding assistance to Seychelles, particularly in the health sector. The Cuban medical cooperation with Seychelles has included the deployment of doctors and the training of Seychellois medical professionals over the decades.
She recalled that since 2020, Seychelles and Cuba have signed seven legal instruments and memorandums of understanding covering areas of mutual interest. The ambassador expressed confidence that the strong ties between the two countries will continue to deepen in the years ahead, with cooperation expected to grow in education, health, and cultural exchange. President Herminie thanked the ambassador for her service and for the role she has played in further strengthening bilateral relations during her tenure.
